{"id":19975,"date":"2018-06-20T13:11:28","date_gmt":"2018-06-20T13:11:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchmanmedia.org\/?p=19975"},"modified":"2018-06-24T21:34:22","modified_gmt":"2018-06-24T21:34:22","slug":"females-are-outperforming-males-on-every-educational-level","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchmanmedia.org\/?p=19975","title":{"rendered":"Females Are Outperforming Males On Every Educational Level"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-19979\" src=\"https:\/\/watchmanmedia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/8-A-level-results-women-PA-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/watchmanmedia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/8-A-level-results-women-PA-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/watchmanmedia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/8-A-level-results-women-PA-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/watchmanmedia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/8-A-level-results-women-PA-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/watchmanmedia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/8-A-level-results-women-PA-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/watchmanmedia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/8-A-level-results-women-PA-320x240.jpg 320w, https:\/\/watchmanmedia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/8-A-level-results-women-PA.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>It is an uncomfortable truth that most educators simply do not want to talk about.\u00a0 Females are dramatically outperforming males on every educational level, and many are wondering what this means for our future.\u00a0 If men do not feel a strong sense of purpose and meaning, they can get into trouble really quickly.<\/p>\n<p>As I write this article, the vast majority of those that abuse drugs are men, the vast majority of those that commit violent crimes are men, and the vast majority of those that we put into prison are men.\u00a0 I began researching this article by looking into the fact that the labor participation rate for men has been declining for decades, but our problems run much deeper than that.<\/p>\n<p>Today, so many men feel lost.\u00a0 Millions of them don\u2019t have a sense of direction, millions of them don\u2019t have anything that really drives or motivates them, and millions of them are deeply depressed and greatly dissatisfied with life.<\/p>\n<p>For a lot of them, it started very early.\u00a0 As Dr. Michael Thompson told <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" title=\"CBS News\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/the-gender-gap-boys-lagging\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CBS News<\/a>,<\/span> all across America girls are outperforming boys at every educational level\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Girls outperform boys in elementary school, middle school, high school, and college, and graduate school,\u201d<\/strong> says Dr. Michael Thompson, a school psychologist who writes about the academic problems of boys in his book, \u201c<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" title=\"Raising Cain\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2MCZHIW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Raising Cain<\/a><\/span>.\u201d He says that after decades of special attention, girls are soaring, while boys are stagnating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cGirls are being told, \u2018Go for it, you can do it. Go for it, you can do it.\u2019 They are getting an immense amount of support,\u201d he says. \u201cBoys hear that the way to shine is athletically. And boys get a lot of mixed messages about what it means to be masculine and what it means to be a student. Does being a good student make you a real man? I don\u2019t think so\u2026 It is not cool.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Perhaps one of the big reasons why young males are so drawn to sports is because it allows them to do the sorts of things the come naturally to males.\u00a0 Sporting events allow young males to engage in battle, to hunt and to conquer.\u00a0 Yes, it is a simulated environment, but sporting events really do bring out something primal in young boys.<\/p>\n<p>We all have natural tendencies, and it appears that modern forms of schooling are doing a much better job of connecting with females.\u00a0 In fact, one extremely large study found that girls all over the world are substantially outperforming boys <a title=\"in the classroom\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/teen-angst\/201406\/educations-great-divide-girls-outperforming-boys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">in the classroom<\/span><\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to a recent study from University of New Brunswick in Canada, girls have been outperforming boys consistently through the years. It is a popular belief that boys perform better in subjects like Math and Science; however, a review of 308 studies involving more than 1.1 million children across the globe has challenged this <a class=\"inline-links topic-link\" style=\"color: #000000;\" title=\"Psychology Today looks at stereotype\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/basics\/bias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">stereotype<\/span><\/a>. <strong>The study looked at data from 1914 to 2011 and the findings suggest that girls do better in school than boys in the classroom regardless of the material.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So it isn\u2019t just in the United States that this is happening.<\/p>\n<p>And it is a trend that does not seem to diminish with age.<\/p>\n<p>Young women are dominating in high schools all over the nation, and at one high school in Massachusetts girls make up <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" title=\"70 to 80 percent\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/the-gender-gap-boys-lagging\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">70 to 80 percent<\/a> <\/span>of the students in advanced placement classes\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At graduation ceremonies last June at Hanover High School in Massachusetts, it was the ninth year in a row that a girl was on the podium as school valedictorian. Girls also took home nearly all the honors, including the science prize, says principal Peter Badalament.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c[Girls] tend to dominate the landscape academically right now,\u201d he says, even in math and science.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The school\u2019s advanced placement classes, which admit only the most qualified students, are often <strong>70 percent to 80 percent girls<\/strong>. This includes calculus. And in AP biology, there was not a single boy.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I suppose the silver lining for young men is that if they really want to meet more girls they should just work really, really hard to get into those AP classes.<\/p>\n<p>But the truth is that this is no joking matter.\u00a0 At this point, higher education in the United States is totally dominated by women.\u00a0 Just check out <a title=\"these numbers\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnsnews.com\/news\/article\/terence-p-jeffrey\/women-earn-57-us-bachelors-degrees-18th-straight-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">these numbers<\/span><\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Women earned approximately <strong>57 percent<\/strong> of the bachelor\u2019s degrees awarded by U.S. institutions of higher education in the 2016-2017 academic year,<\/span> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" title=\"according to data released this week by the National Center for Education Statistics\" href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/pubsearch\/pubsinfo.asp?pubid=2018060\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according to data released this week by the National Center for Education Statistics<\/a>,<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">which is part of the U.S. Department of Education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That,<\/span> <a title=\"according to NCES data\" href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/programs\/digest\/d17\/tables\/dt17_322.20.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">according to NCES data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">,<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">makes 2016-2017 <strong>the eighteenth straight academic year<\/strong> in which women have earned approximately 57 percent of the bachelor\u2019s degrees awarded by U.S. colleges and universities.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Did you understand what that excerpt was saying?<\/p>\n<p>Women have received about 57 percent of all bachelor\u2019s degrees in this country <strong>for 18 years in a row<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Our future doctors, lawyers, politicians and societal leaders come from our pool of college graduates, and the numbers tell us that women are going to be dominating those fields for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n<p>So what will men be doing?<\/p>\n<p>Well, in recent years more of them have been dropping out of the labor force than ever before.\u00a0 The following comes from <a title=\"the New York Times\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/06\/15\/business\/men-unemployment-jobs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">the New York Times<\/span><\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Among women, the share out of the labor force has fallen from 66 percent in 1950 to 43 percent today. That is not surprising in light of changing social norms and the greater career opportunities now open to women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Men, however, exhibit the opposite long-term trend. In 1950, <strong>14 percent<\/strong> of men were out of the labor force. Today, that figure stands at <strong>31 percent<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>For those of you that prefer graphics, here is a chart from the Federal Reserve that shows this staggering decline over the last several decades.\u00a0 Please note that we are currently at a much lower level than we were at during the last major recession\u2026<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13883 \" src=\"http:\/\/theeconomiccollapseblog.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/fredgraph1-540x369.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"777\" height=\"531\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If men aren\u2019t working, how are they supporting themselves?<\/p>\n<p>For many, the social safety net provided by the government is an easy answer.\u00a0 Here is more from <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" title=\"the New York Times\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/06\/15\/business\/men-unemployment-jobs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the New York Times<\/a><\/span>\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One might wonder how these less educated, prime-age men support themselves after leaving the labor force. The social safety net plays a role.
