{"id":16539,"date":"2017-04-21T19:54:56","date_gmt":"2017-04-21T19:54:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/watchmanmedia.org\/?p=16539"},"modified":"2017-04-25T23:15:09","modified_gmt":"2017-04-25T23:15:09","slug":"millennials-are-shunning-marriage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchmanmedia.org\/?p=16539","title":{"rendered":"Millennials Shunning Marriage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16542\" src=\"https:\/\/watchmanmedia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/lonely_man_810_500_55_s_c1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"810\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/watchmanmedia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/lonely_man_810_500_55_s_c1.jpg 810w, https:\/\/watchmanmedia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/lonely_man_810_500_55_s_c1-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/watchmanmedia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/lonely_man_810_500_55_s_c1-768x474.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/>Did you know that the percentage of 18 to 34-year-old Americans that are married and living with a spouse has dropped <strong>by more than half<\/strong> since 1975?\u00a0 Back then, <strong>57 percent<\/strong> of everyone in that age group \u201clived with a spouse\u201d, but today that number has dropped to just <strong>27 percent<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>These numbers come from \u201cthe Changing Economics and Demographics of Young Adulthood\u201d report that was just released by the U.S. Census Bureau.\u00a0 Some are postulating that the reason for this dramatic cultural shift is a phenomenon known as \u201cextended adolescence\u201d, while others fear that large numbers of young men and\/or young women are giving up on the concept of marriage altogether.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of getting married and starting their own households, many young adults are deciding that living with Mom and Dad is the best approach.\u00a0 In fact, this new Census Bureau report found that one out of every three 18 to 34-year-old Americans\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" title=\"is currently living with their parents\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-4429356\/More-young-Americans-living-parents.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">is currently living with their parents<\/a>\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to the Changing Economics and Demographics of Young Adulthood report for 2016, <strong>one in three Americans ages 18 to 34 are living at home with their parents<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Coming in second place is living with a spouse (27 per cent), followed by other (i.e. living with a roommate or other relatives, 21 per cent), living with a boyfriend or girlfriend (12 per cent) and living alone (8 per cent).<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Once the last recession ended, this trend was supposed to start reversing, but instead the number of young adults still living at home has just continued to increase.\u00a0 This is going to have very serious implications for our looming retirement crisis, and that is something that I am going to write about later today on <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" title=\"End Of The American Dream\" href=\"http:\/\/endoftheamericandream.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>End Of The American Dream<\/em><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>And a lot of these young adults are not being productive members of society at all.\u00a0 In fact, this new report from the Census Bureau found that one out of every four 25 to 34-year-old Americans that are currently living at home do not have a job and they are not going to school either.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, they need to get a life.\u00a0 I really like how <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" title=\"a recent CNBC editorial\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2017\/04\/20\/scariest-economic-indicator-more-millennials-living-home-commentary.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a recent CNBC editorial<\/a> <\/span>made this point\u2026<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of the most memorable Saturday Night Live sketches ever was broadcast in 1986 when guest host William Shatner played himself appearing at fictional Star Trek convention. After fielding one childish question after another from costumed fans in their late 20s and 30s, Shatner loses his cool and shouts: \u201cGET A LIFE, will you people? I mean, for crying out loud, it\u2019s just a TV show! \u2026 Move out of your parents\u2019 basements! Get your own apartments and GROW THE HELL UP!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Thirty-one years later, it sure seems like all of America needs to heed that message. Here\u2019s why: The Census Bureau now says that more 18-34 year-olds are living with their parents than with a spouse.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But a lot of young men these days do not even want to go down the traditional route of marriage, family, career, etc.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, a lot of them are forsaking the concept of marriage together.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" title=\"Author Suzanne Venker\" href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2o970PS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Author Suzanne Venker<\/a> <\/span>says that a lot of these men are blaming their lack of desire to get married <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" title=\"on modern women\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lifesitenews.com\/news\/young-men-giving-up-on-marriage-women-arent-women-anymore?utm_content=buffer547bf&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=%20lifesitenews+facebook&amp;utm_campaign=buffer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on modern women<\/a>\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When I ask them why, the answer is always the same: women aren\u2019t women anymore.\u201d Feminism, which teaches women to think of men as the enemy, has made women \u201cangry\u201d and \u201cdefensive, though often unknowingly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cNow the men have nowhere to go. It is precisely this dynamic \u2013 women good\/men bad \u2013 that has destroyed the relationship between the sexes. Yet somehow, men are still to blame when love goes awry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cMen are tired,\u201d Venker wrote. \u201cTired of being told there\u2019s something fundamentally wrong with them. Tired of being told that if women aren\u2019t happy, it\u2019s men\u2019s fault.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>On the flip side, a lot of women are extremely distressed that so few men seem to have the willingness to commit these days.\u00a0 So many men just want to run around having sex with an endless series of women without ever putting a wedding ring on any of their fingers.<\/p>\n<p>Of course many men figure that if they can get some of the best benefits of marriage (sex, companionship, etc.) without having to make a commitment then that is a pretty good deal for them.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I am a huge advocate of marriage, but the rest of society is moving in the exact opposite direction.\u00a0 According to <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" title=\"the Pew Research Center\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pewsocialtrends.org\/2010\/11\/18\/ii-overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the Pew Research Center<\/a>,<\/span> 44 percent of 18 to 29-year-old Americans now believe that \u201cmarriage is becoming obsolete\u201d.\u00a0 And for a lot more numbers like this, please see my previous article entitled <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" title=\"\u201c43 Facts About Love, Sex, Dating And Marriage That Are Almost Too Crazy To Believe\u201d\" href=\"http:\/\/endoftheamericandream.com\/archives\/43-facts-about-love-sex-dating-and-marriage-that-are-almost-too-crazy-to-believe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201c43 Facts About Love, Sex, Dating And Marriage That Are Almost Too Crazy To Believe\u201d<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But of course not all young adults that are living at home are doing it for the wrong reasons.\u00a0 Thanks to our long-term economic decline, it is much more difficult for young people to find good paying jobs today than it was several decades ago.\u00a0 The following comes from\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" title=\"CNS News\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnsnews.com\/news\/article\/terence-p-jeffrey\/census-more-americans-18-34-now-live-parents-spouse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNS News<\/a>\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cMore young men are falling to the bottom of the income ladder,<\/span>\u201d <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" title=\"says the Census Bureau study\" href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/content\/dam\/Census\/library\/publications\/2017\/demo\/p20-579.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">says the Census Bureau study<\/a>.<\/span> \u201c<span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 1975, only 25 percent of men, aged 25 to 34, had incomes of less than $30,000 per year.
