{"id":12125,"date":"2015-06-01T20:03:22","date_gmt":"2015-06-01T20:03:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.watchmanmedia.org\/?p=12125"},"modified":"2016-11-06T21:14:48","modified_gmt":"2016-11-06T21:14:48","slug":"time-abolish-family-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/watchmanmedia.org\/?p=12125","title":{"rendered":"Is It Time to &#8216;Abolish the Family&#8217; as We Know It?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/watchmanmedia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/familymeal-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-14459\" src=\"https:\/\/watchmanmedia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/familymeal-2-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Family Eating Lunch Together\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/watchmanmedia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/familymeal-2-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/watchmanmedia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/familymeal-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/watchmanmedia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/familymeal-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/watchmanmedia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/familymeal-2.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I appreciate it when leftists get off script, dispatch with the propagandist talking points and say what&#8217;s really on their minds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Progressives&#8221; hate natural marriage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And they hate the natural family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But they do so love big government.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In<\/span> <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/radionational\/programs\/philosopherszone\/new-family-values\/6437058\" target=\"_blank\">an article<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">f<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">or the Australian Broadcasting Corporation titled &#8220;Is having a loving family an unfair advantage?&#8221; Joe Gelonesi, host of &#8220;The<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Philosopher&#8217;s Zone&#8221; radio program, calls the natural mom-dad biological family a &#8220;weathered institution ever more in need of a rationale for existing.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While he admits that it may be premature to &#8220;abolish the family and put children into care of the state,&#8221; Gelonesi suggests, nonetheless, that such government action might be the most &#8220;straightforward answer&#8221;\u2014if only &#8220;from a purely instrumental position.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But what&#8217;s the question? And why such hostility toward the natural family?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Buzzz! &#8220;What is social justice?&#8221; for $1,000, Alex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the context of marriage, family and economics, the left&#8217;s upside-down brand of social justice, of &#8220;equality,&#8221; requires that, in order to level the playing field, we must bulldoze the playing field altogether\u2014we must take from the haves, give to the have nots and dumb-down everything else to the lowest common denominator. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If one person is suffering, then &#8220;equality&#8221; demands that all must suffer. The solution to inequality borne by those in the Third World, for instance, is to make the whole world the Third World (see Barack Hussein Obama, circa 2008-2016).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The same goes for marriage and family. As Gelonesi explains it, &#8220;The power of the family to tilt equality&#8221; creates an &#8220;unfair advantage&#8221; for children without loving biological parents. &#8220;When a parent wants to do the best for her child,&#8221; he claims, it necessarily &#8220;makes the playing field for others even more lopsided.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And so, whereas the conservative solution is to offer a leg up, the &#8220;progressive&#8221; solution prefers a jackboot down. While equality of opportunity is a step in the right direction, equality of outcome is the statist endgame. Naturally, to reach this lofty goal, government intervention is required.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is pure egalitarianism\u2014cultural Marxism\u2014and, as jaw-droppingly insane as it is, it yet remains the pervasive philosophy among &#8220;progressives&#8221; worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In order to bolster his thesis, Gelonesi interviews Adam Swift, a professor of political theory at Great Britain&#8217;s University of Warwick. Swift has co-authored, along with University of Wisconsin professor Harry Brighouse, the book, Family Values: The Ethics of Parent-Child Relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Don&#8217;t let the title fool you. There&#8217;s nothing ethical about what these two men propose. &#8220;Challenging some of our most commonly held beliefs about the family,&#8221; boasts the editor&#8217;s summary, &#8220;Brighouse and Swift explain why a child&#8217;s interest in autonomy severely limits parents&#8217; right to shape their children&#8217;s values, and why parents have no fundamental right to confer wealth or advantage on their children.&#8221;<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Yikes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Gelonesi&#8217;s article describes Swift as &#8220;a philosopher with a rescue plan very much in tune with the times.&#8221; This, as you will see, says a great deal about &#8220;the times.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;One way philosophers might think about solving the social justice problem would be by simply abolishing the family,&#8221; suggests Swift. &#8220;If the family is this source of unfairness in society, then it looks plausible to think that if we abolished the family there would be a more level playing field.&#8221;<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Swift concedes, however, that the family does confer some benefit to children, and, therefore, institutionalizing the little buggers may not be the best solution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;What we realized we needed was a way of thinking about what it was we wanted to allow parents to do for their children, and what it was that we didn&#8217;t need to allow parents to do for their children, if allowing those activities would create unfairnesses for other people&#8217;s children,&#8221; he told Gelonesi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The operable words here are &#8220;allow,&#8221; &#8220;unfairness&#8221; and &#8220;other people&#8217;s children.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;For Swift, there&#8217;s one particular choice that fails the test,&#8221; continues Gelonesi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Private schooling cannot be justified by appeal to these familial relationship goods,&#8221; he says. &#8220;It&#8217;s just not the case that in order for a family to realize these intimate, loving, authoritative, affectionate, love-based relationships you need to be able to send your child to an elite private school.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;In contrast, reading stories at bedtime,&#8221; argues Swift, &#8220;gives rise to acceptable familial relationship goods, even though this also bestows advantage.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Swift opines that, while banning bedtime stories outright might be an impractical step toward ensuring fairness\u2014banning private schools is at once a plausible and necessary means to that end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;We could prevent elite private schooling without any real hit to healthy family relationships, whereas if we say that you can&#8217;t read bedtime stories to your kids because it&#8217;s not fair that some kids get them and others don&#8217;t, then that would be too big a hit at the core of family life.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;For Swift and Brighouse,&#8221; writes Gelonesi, &#8220;our society is curiously stuck in a time warp of proprietorial rights: If you biologically produce a child, you own it.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;&#8216;We think that although in practice it makes sense to parent your biological offspring, that is not the same as saying that in virtue of having produced the child the biological parent has the right to parent.'&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">By now, you should be saying &#8220;holy smokes&#8221; or some such. This is unadulterated fascism on parade. And it&#8217;s winning the Western world over.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">Speaking of parades, Swift goes on to wade the unpotable waters that will inevitably fester in the wake of the global &#8220;gay marriage&#8221; tsunami.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Nothing in our theory assumes two parents: There might be two, there might be three, and there might be four,&#8221; he observes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Politicians love to talk about family values, but meanwhile the family is in flux, and so we wanted to go back to philosophical basics to work out what are families for and what&#8217;s so great about them and then we can start to figure out whether it matters whether you have two parents or three or one, or whether they&#8217;re heterosexual, etc.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But lest we deem the good professor entirely bat-guano-crazy, he sets an arbitrary cap on parents permitted, to allay our concerns. &#8220;We do want to defend the family against complete fragmentation and dissolution,&#8221; he graciously allows. &#8220;If you start to think about a child having 10 parents, then that&#8217;s looking like a committee rearing a child; there aren&#8217;t any parents there at all.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Such is the irrational mindset of the self-styled rationalist\u2014the immoral nattering of the moral relativist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">According to Swift and millions of very dangerous people just like him, the biblical admonition to &#8220;honor thy father and mother&#8221; is totally pass\u00e9. Seeward <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/seewalds.com\/grace-greater-than-our-sin\/#more-341\" target=\"_blank\">was right<\/a>.<\/span>..They\u2019ve been looking for an opportunity to blackmail the family that reminds all of us that we\u2019ve sinned against God. By destroying and discrediting the Duggar family, they are attacking the family, faith and decency-that\u2019s the end-game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In his book, <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Storm-Warning-Persecution-Christians-Traditionalists\/dp\/1575580489\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1433188082&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=Storm+warning+Don+McAlvany\" target=\"_blank\">Storm Warning<\/a><\/span> Don McAlvany indeed warns us:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The destruction of the family bond has always been an important step toward achieving totalitarian rule. The feminists and other global activists are slowly but steadily destroying individuals and families because they want to control our children and transform their minds as a major element in their quest for a one-world government dictatorship controlled by the communist state.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Christians are the only people standing in the way of these globalists, so they must attack the family, neutralize parental rights, and take control of the children through all these socialized systems. They know that many Christian parents cannot be re-educated for this new occultist anti-Christ dispensation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So the tactic is to break the bond and eliminate the influence of the parents on the children. How do they intend to achieve this? They will do this \u201cby instilling in children secular humanist, anti-religious thinking; weakening them through promiscuous sexual behavior; and programming them to be obedient, passive, citizens or serfs in the emerging new global village.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The theory of collective parenting is nothing new. Many social workers share the same view of severing parental rights and demolishing parental authority in certain cases. Children don\u2019t belong to whole communities and they are not property of the state. The concept of \u201ccollective ownership\u201d of children comes from communism, not from the Bible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Christian parents who believe and teach their children biblical principles don\u2019t believe that children belong to whole communities, but rather to individual families. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But the elites of our day share the same philosophy of the French Revolutionists\u2014 that children belong to the state before belonging to private families. Louise-Antoine de Saint reportedly agreed that \u201cchildren be seized from families and raised entirely by the state after the age of five.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Lord has entrusted our children to our care\u2014not just their bodies, but also their souls. Parents should be the children\u2019s primary educators, protectors, and guides who train and raise them up to live a godly life in this present age. The function of the state is to support the family in this divinely ordained assignment. (See Romans 13)<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Theologian <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/web-exclusives\/2013\/04\/christian-principles-for-immigration-reform\" target=\"_blank\">Johannes Messner<\/a> <\/span>is quoted to have written, <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">The family is the prior to state. It holds natural rights which the state is bound to recognize\u2026.The prominent task of the state is to make it possible for families to fulfill their natural function.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Having children is a proof that all people are created in the image of God and they have worth. But this pride-filled age of reason and philosophy is always trying to look for psychological and technological explanation for everything\u2014including raising the children. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We are now using medical technology and knocking at the door of families and churches saying, we have to take over now, who lives and who will die. We\u2019ve almost decided to kill everyone that inconveniences us.
