On Friday the 23 December 2016, when everyone was busy preparing for Christmas, the UN Security Council adopted resolution 2334 which is a legally binding resolution that sets parameters for a “two-state solution” that Israel cannot accept which gives the Palestinians every square inch of East Jerusalem.
This resolution restricts Israel construction in the Biblical heartland of Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem which is the very agenda that has been pushed by most American presidents and since Obama took office in 2009.
Many alternative news outlets have concluded that Barack Obama decided to viciously stab Israel in the back. Michael Snyder calls it: “the greatest betrayal of Israel in American history, and according to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the Obama administration has been plotting this for quite a while…”On his Economic Collapse website, Micheal writes:
By defiantly attempting to divide the land of Israel and the city of Jerusalem during the waning days of his presidency, Barack Obama has cursed America…..And of course the entire Middle East is going to suffer as well. Instead of bringing peace, this resolution just sets the stage for more conflict……A great war is coming to the Middle East, and it will be a life or death struggle between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
God chose only one nation Israel to be his nation, and any non-Jewish nation is a Gentile nation, and therefore cannot be special in the same way as Israel. But the Bible describes a time when Israel will be isolated from the rest of the world and attacked by kings of the north, east, south, and west. Zechariah the prophet tells us that the final battles will be fought over the city of Jerusalem.
And in that day I will make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all peoples; all who lift it or burden themselves with it shall be sorely wounded. And all the nations of the earth shall come and gather together against it” (Zechariah 12:3).
Has that day arrived? History tells us that every nation or empire that has betrayed or persecuted the Jews has sooner or later come to an end. For instance, all the mighty Egyptian, Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, Greek, Roman, Spanish and Ottoman Turkish Empires have disappeared from history.
Ironically, all of these empires have persecuted Jews and Christians. There is overwhelming evidence in the Word of God to indicate that anyone who curses the true descendants of Abraham, whether individually or as a nation is on a very slippery slope indeed.
The Bible makes it clear that those who bless Israel will be blessed and He who curses her will be cursed and in Israel all the families and kindred of the earth be blessed and by her they will bless themselves. (Paraphrasing Genesis 12:3)
More recently the laboratory is the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, Western Europe, and the British Empire.
The Bible tells us, God allots every nation its place in time and space having definitely determined their allotted periods of time and the fixed boundaries of their habitation (their settlements, lands, and abodes)…. (See Acts 17:26-27)
I believe in the sanctity of the nation state; but no nation has an automatic right to exist forever. God allows a nation to rise and become an empire, and it is God who brings it to an end. Americans maybe it would be worth looking at the brief history of Britain’s attitude to Israel and its subsequent decline.
The British Empire
History records that the British Empire was arguably one of the largest world empires ever known. It spanned the globe from the 16th to the 20th centuries. The school atlas in those years was mainly red. Historians tell us it was possible to travel around the world and never leave the British soil. This is where this expression came from, “The sun never sets on the British Empire.”
Why did God bless England? God blessed England for the sake of His church around the around. He was prospering Great Britain in order to reach the nations of the world with His gospel.
While England was expanding its colonies worldwide, God was raising up powerful preachers in England, Scotland and Wales. And His Spirit gave the churches in Britain a heart for world missions. So as soon any British trade ship landed on a colony, a mission outpost quickly sprang up.
Every British territory worldwide became a centre for spreading the gospel. Great Britain prosperity was totally subordinate to God’s purposes, which was to evangelize unreached nations—even though God later judged England for its merciless methods of colonization and slavery.
Sadly, with time England’s prosperity brought spiritual decay, lewdness and immorality to the country. The church began to dwindle in numbers and influence and missionary zeal waned.
Eventually God stripped Britain of its worldwide empire. Today secular humanists exercise more control in positions of leadership in England than they do across the Atlantic. Four percent of the British people attend church services, and England’s record on religious freedom and commitment today is appalling.
It has been noted that in earlier times wars and revolutions have often resulted in major revivals and renewal movements. After the war and the Holocaust in 1945, revivals occurred individually and also in groups, but not on a large scale. The German preacher Eric Sauer (1898–1959) wrote,
It is an alarming fact that in spite of the mighty voice of God in the momentous happenings of recent years, there has been no really great lasting general revival, not in a single European country and this unfortunately includes England.
What Happened to the British Empire?
The answer is that Britain lost its purpose for being made great which was to preserve the gospel and subsequently the nation betrayed God’s people, Israel.
Yet, God used Christian England as His channel to fulfil His promises, and Britain answered the call by putting into effect the declaration originally made on November 2, 1917, in favour of the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people.
Furthermore, Britain was obliged to use her best endeavours to facilitate Jewish immigration and to encourage Jewish settlement on the land. Lloyd George, the British prime minister during World War I, Lord Balfour, and General Edmund Allenby, all believed that biblical prophecies were the essential factor in any decisions regarding the Jewish people and Palestine.
Balfour believed the Jews were exiles who would be given back their homeland in payment for Christianity’s “immeasurable debt.”
Remember that although Britain played a great part in creating the nation of Israel, there was a change of direction to those who did not feel warmly about the idea of a Jewish homeland. The Jewish community tried to persuade the British to allow increased Jewish immigration, but not to Arabs, as they were threatening to cut off access to Middle Eastern oil supplies if immigration was increased.
The British became increasingly friendly toward the Arabs in an attempt to win favour from them, and this resulted in restricting Jewish immigration to Palestine through a document known as the White Paper that overturned the Balfour Declaration. This document specified stipulations that proved disastrous to the Jewish people:
- It called for an independent Palestinian state established within ten years, governed by both Jews and Arabs.
- The Jewish immigration to Palestine under the British mandate was to be limited to 75,000 over the next five years, after that it would depend on Arab consent.
- Jews would only buy land in areas where they were already the majority population.
- Jewish immigration would be limited to the economic capacity of the country.
Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who supported the Jewish national homeland, called it “a gross breach of faith.” Although Churchill reaffirmed his support to the Jewish homeland, he was the one who published the White Paper that included these four major stipulations.
The turning point came on November 9, 1938, a night that has been named the “Night of Broken Glass” because of the shattered glass as Jewish shops in Germany were destroyed by Hitler’s henchmen.
More than 260 synagogues were burned that night and 20,000 Jews were arrested. The Jewish community was then fined $400 million for damages inflicted by the soldiers to their property.
From that moment on, Adolf Hitler began to speak openly of annihilating the Jews. In spite of the role played by Britain in re-establishing the Jewish state, it was the White Paper of 1939 that condemned millions of European Jews to the concentration camps for Hitler’s “final solution.”
Churchill was optimistic that the Jews would be established in the position where they belonged. He said he had an inheritance left to him by Balfour and he wasn’t going to change his mind, though he did admit there were dark forces working against him, although he did not know how powerful those forces were.
No matter how committed he was to the cause of the Jewish homeland, he was resisted by the British foreign office and the authorities in Jerusalem who were now in charge of the mandate.
In 1945 Churchill was forced out of office by the new labour government led by Clement Atlee. Again, when the war ended, Palestine remained closed to the survivors of the concentration camps, who had now become homeless.
Their homeland was allowed to take only a few thousand immigrants each year. Most of them were returned to the very concentration camps from which they had been freed.
Ernest Bevin, who was the foreign minister in the Atlee Administration, was not very happy with the Jewish immigration. He restricted many Jews who attempted to return to their Promised Land. U.S. President Harry Truman was moved by the plight of Jewish refugees and urged Britain to open Palestine and increase immigration.
Bevin’s response was, “The Jews have waited two thousand years; they can wait a little longer.”
By the end of 1947 the British had decided they wanted nothing to do with the whole mandate. As a result, the newly formed United Nations organization went back to the drawing board.
The final nail in the coffin came on May 1947 when the United Nations had created a committee to study the Palestinian question. The Arabs refused to participate and the committee recommended the partition of the remaining 23 percent of Palestine into Jewish and Arab states, with Jerusalem as a free international city.
However, this committee forgot or ignored the fact that Britain had already divided Palestine in 1922 and created an Arab state called Transjordan. Britain supported only the international status of Jerusalem in this resolution. It was submitted to the General Assembly of the United Nations, which passed the resolution thirty-three to thirteen and gave the necessary two-thirds majority.
Britain (just like America has just done) abstained because of her recommendation in the Balfour Declaration in 1917. The British, who had been so supportive to the Jewish homeland, were now opposed to the formation of a Jewish homeland.
We again need to remind ourselves that the British worldwide Empire disappeared within a comparatively short period of time after they refused to vote for Israel’s restoration at the United Nations in November 1947.
Under the United Nations Partition Plan, the Jews were denied sovereignty over Jerusalem, their ancient capital, but they gracefully accepted the Partition Plan that had been recommended. After all it matters very little as to how much land Israel relinquishes for peace, as ultimately they will take over all the land from the Nile River in Egypt to the Euphrates River in Iraq.
The question we should be asking is:
Is History Repeating Itself?
With the end of WWII America oversaw the breakup of the entire British Empire; took control of the Middle East (with its petrodollars); and took control of Europe by introducing the Marshall Plan leading to another empire-the European Union.
America didn’t join the allies against Hitler until the end of 1941. Why? Because between 1932 and 1939, the expectation was that the next war according to different sources would be between Britain and America. And with the collapse of the Soviet Empire, America became the world’s only super power!
Why did it become the world’s only super power? There are two reasons: 1. God blessed America to “Go into the world and preach Christ!” 2. To protect, bless and defend Israel. It is not an accident or mere coincidence that America with the world’s best treatment of the Jews was founded on more Christian principles than any other nation.
Bible believing Christians in America understood the spiritual implications of blessing Israel; therefore, they’ve been blessed in many spiritual ways. The nation has more Christians than any other.
America just like all nations has sinned, but in spite of its many sins, America has experienced more religious freedom and prosperity than any other nation partly because of the churches desire to support the Jewish nation.
And some of America’s political leaders recognized that the Jews are God’s chosen people, not because they deserve it, but because He chose them like He chose the church. Yet, as happened with Israel, Britain and other highly blessed nations, prosperity has deceived America. Now America is completely forgetting why God blessed them.
Judgment of the Sheep and Goat Nations
In a nutshell, the prophets and Jesus Himself make it clear that God judges other nations by their attitude towards His people. This principle is clearly illustrated in God’s dealing with the heathen nations that surrounded Israel.
What is the principle on which the nations are rejected or accepted? It’s found in Matthew 25:40 “And the King will reply to them, truly I tell you, in so far as you did it for one of the least [in the estimation of men] of these My brethren, you did it for Me.” Who are the least of these? In Joel 3:2 we know that the use of brothers refers to the Israelites. All nations are going to be judged by the way they treated and related to the Jewish people.
When Paul of Tarsus met Jesus on His on the road to Damascus to persecute Christians, he heard a voice saying to him Saul, Saul why are you persecuting Me? He was horrified to learn that in persecuting Christians he was persecuting Jesus. Every nation of the world has God’s people; therefore every nation has to decide how they would treat God’s people, whom the Bible calls the apple of God’s eye.
Throughout history God has brought down nations and entire empires just to protect His testimony on earth. God blesses or judges the nations according to how they deal with His two covenant people: Israel and the Church.
America be warned. You’ve been weighed in the balances and are found wanting!
